Flight Report, Sunday 10/25

It was a beautiful clear day, although a bit on the windy side.  There was some kind of major league Frisbee tournament at Mitre, so that venue was off-limits until late in the day.

The action began at the Burlington RC Flyers club field.  It was a decent turnout, all around.  I showed up around ten, Fettah a bit later, followed by Derek and family, Scott and Sue, Alex and Zack.  Even my wife (Merry) showed up for a while.  Breakages were common, mostly minor, though Scott won the prize -- he literally flew the wings off his T-28.  Fettah flew the Robbe bipe nicely, but the Extra suffered a bent landing gear strut.  You could tell that Fettah was a bit traumatized by that.  He was anxiously trying to bend the strut back into shape, using the slats in the picnic table.  Apparently there's something not quite right about the battery or the power system on the Extra.

I had a hard landing on the big Formosa that tore off both landing struts (already repaired...)  Flew the T-28 as well and the the Firefly, without mishap.  Derek flew his MiniMag and Zack flew and crashed an EDF jet... which obviously had done some crashing before.  I know there were photos of Scott's crash... we should get them posted to the galleries, ASAP.

As we wound down at BRCF, we gathered for a few group photos.  (Let's get 'em posted -- I want to see them!)  Around 2 PM, a caravan formed for Tewksbury, which I did not join.  So someone else will need to report on that part of the day.  I went home for some honey-dos.  Rake the leaves off the deck, and that sort of thing.

I returned to Mitre around 4:30, and by that time the Frisbee players were mostly gone.  I expected to be flying alone, but was pleasantly surprised to have company -- Alex, Chip and Scott all showed up and before long the air was full of buzzing little planes.  Scott said something about crashing a bunch of planes out at Tweeksbury, but I'm not sure I heard that part correctly.  Alex and Chip competed with their little micro planes, but whipped out their larger tools as well -- Alex is flying the Mini Ultra Stick like a pro already.  And of course, Chip makes everything look soooo easy.  I want one of whatever he's flying.

I had to leave Mitre at around six or so... I'm sure the hard cores stayed 'till the very last of the daylight was gone.  Got in some flying this morning before work again, this time with the big 'Mosa and my big (40") Depron 3D plane, which (for once) I didn't bash.

Rafe, thank you for the excellent report. The caravan formed for the Tewksbury inluded 6 cars carrying Scott, Sue, Skylar (Scott's daughter), Derek, Jenna (Derek's daughter), Alex, Chip, Chris (from Burlington RC, nice guy), and myself. Once we got there, we were welcomed by Steve, who told us he was the field marshall at 495th R/C Squadron Inc. in Tewksbury. He was very friendly, and went over the field rules and asked about our AMA memberships. He also invoted to their club meeting Wednesday at 7:30pm. If you are interested, check out their website for details (Chip - we can also list it on our website under "Upcoming Events"). Scott started with a couple of crashes and continued with another plane resisting to leave the bench because of a radio issue. I helped him to fly his little Ultimate Biplane he calls "Barney". It is a little and heavy plane with a strong motor and has to be flown fast just to stay afloat. We were buddy-corded, so I did the takeoff, trimming and landing, and Scott did most of the flying and scary aerobatic maneuvers. It was quite exhilarating being responsible of a plane a little above my level, but everything went fine except a little rough landing due to a stall a couple inches off the ground. Fortunately nothing major broke except a stripped rudder servo and the little tail gear (Scott, did you fing the tail gear?). I flew my Edge 540 once, and then I had to leave to get back home to run some errands. Derek did a very nice flight on his MiniMag a.k.a. Maggie and pulled some loops. Chris did his first loop with his Blade 400 heli and hooted with excitement. I did not see Chip or Alex fly in Tewksbury, but it sounds like they did afterwards at Mitre. Anyway, someone else should report and fill in the blanks of this great day of flying. Hopefully we will do it again next week, weather cooperating.

Fettah

PS: I will post the pictures tonight when I get home, promise.

Thanks for the summary Rafe and Fettah. With so much going on that day, I certainly missed some of what was going on so these reports fill in the gaps.

I got to fly down here in Newport at lunch and after work today. One flight with the Mini Ultra at lunch followed by two with the Sukhoi, very windy though, the Sukhoi could barely make headway into the wind but was a real screamer downwind. After work, the winds were calm, I found a different field, a great flying site and flew 3 flights on the Sukhoi. I think the GWS 5043 aftermarket prop makes a huge difference in performance on the Sukhoi, much faster than stock. The setting sun put an end to my flying.
